How to Choose a Forklift for Rental in Egypt: Capacity, Load Centre, Mast Height and Tyres
A warehouse manager in 6th of October City books a forklift rental described as "3 tonnes". The first pallet off the container is ceramic tiles, 2.4 tonnes on a 1.2 metre pallet. The machine lifts it, tips forward onto the tips of the forks, and the operator drops it in the aisle. The nameplate was not lying: the truck is rated for 3 tonnes at a 500 mm load centre. With the weight of a deep pallet sitting further out, the same truck is good for a lot less than 3 tonnes, and nobody on site had read the second line of the plate.
The forklift, or clark as it is called on almost every Egyptian site, is the most commonly hired machine specified by a single number. This guide covers what that number means, and the four other things that decide whether a forklift rental in Egypt does the job or spends the week parked: load centre, mast height, tyres and power source.
Rated capacity is a number with conditions attached
Every counterbalance forklift carries a data plate with a rated capacity, and that capacity is only valid at a stated load centre — the horizontal distance from the vertical face of the forks to the centre of gravity of the load. For most trucks up to around 10 tonnes the standard load centre is 500 mm, which corresponds to a compact 1 metre cube sitting tight against the carriage. Push the centre of gravity out to 600 mm or 700 mm, as a long pallet or a bundle of pipe does, and the truck can safely lift noticeably less than the headline figure: the load sits on a lever, with the front axle as the pivot and the counterweight holding the balance.
Three other things reduce the usable capacity below the nameplate:
- Lift height. Many trucks are rated at full height for the basic mast only. Fit a taller mast and the capacity at the top drops, because the mast and the load are further forward and higher.
- Attachments. A sideshift costs a little capacity; a fork positioner more; a clamp, rotator or long fork extensions considerably more, both from their own weight and from pushing the load centre outward. A truck fitted with attachments should carry a second plate giving the derated figure.
- Tilt and ground. Forward tilt at height, a ramp or a soft yard all shift the balance further.
The practical rule: work out the heaviest load, its depth, and how high it has to go, then ask the lessor for the capacity at that load centre and height, not the nameplate figure. The safe answer is usually a class up from the number you first had in mind.

The 2.5 to 3.5 tonne diesel counterbalance is the machine most fleets in Egypt hold in the largest numbers, and it covers most container unloading, block and cement handling and yard work. The mistake at both ends is common: a 2 tonne electric sent to a stone yard, or a 5 tonne diesel squeezed into a warehouse with 3 metre aisles and a roof it will fume under.
Mast height: lift height, lowered height and free lift
The mast is the second most misjudged spec after capacity, and it has three numbers, not one.
Maximum fork height is what everyone quotes. Measure the top beam of the racking, or the height of the highest stack, and add clearance for the pallet and the fork thickness; a truck that reaches the beam exactly cannot place a pallet onto it.
Lowered mast height is the one that gets forgotten. A high-lift triplex mast can be taller when collapsed than a warehouse door, a mezzanine soffit or the roof of a container. If the truck has to drive inside a container or under a low canopy, this figure decides the machine before anything else does.
Free lift is how far the forks rise before the mast itself starts to extend. Inside a container or a low-ceilinged store, a truck with good free lift can lift a pallet clear of the one below it without the mast striking the roof.
Mast type follows from these: a two-stage (duplex) mast for yards and open-fronted stores, a three-stage (triplex) mast with full free lift for high racking behind a low door. Ask for all three numbers and check them against the building, not the catalogue.
Tyres: the difference between a warehouse and a yard
Egyptian sites are hard on forklift tyres. Rebar offcuts, block chippings, sand and untrowelled concrete all take a toll, and the wrong tyre either punctures every week or grinds itself away in a month.

Ask the lessor what the truck is fitted with. A yard machine on cushion tyres and a warehouse machine on chunky pneumatics are both routine mistakes.
Power source: diesel, electric or LPG
The choice is set by where the truck works, not by preference.
- Diesel is the yard default: the most torque, the most tolerant of heat and dust, refuelled in minutes. It should not run inside a closed building for a shift, and in a food or pharma plant it is not acceptable at all.
- Electric is the indoor choice: no fumes, quiet, and cheaper to run per shift once the batteries and charger are on site. The catch in Egypt is charging: a lead-acid truck needs a full shift on charge and a reliable supply, which on a site or in a new-city store may mean a generator sized for the charger. Two batteries or a second truck cover a double shift. Summer heat shortens battery life if the charging room is not ventilated.
- LPG sits between the two, cleaner than diesel and usable in ventilated buildings, but it depends on a dependable cylinder supply, which varies by governorate.
If the machine will run outdoors through an Egyptian summer, ask about a canopy or cab; an operator in Upper Egypt in August will not be productive for a full shift without shade.
Forks, attachments and the loads you actually have
Standard forks are sized for a standard pallet; a 1.2 metre pallet needs the forks to reach most of the way under it, and a longer load needs longer forks or extensions. Every extra length reduces capacity through the load centre, so the fork length and the heaviest load should be decided together. A sideshift is worth having on almost every warehouse and container job: it lets the operator line up a pallet without re-approaching and pays for itself in fewer damaged pallets. A fork positioner matters where pallet widths change constantly. Clamps, drum handlers and rotators exist in the Egyptian rental market but are specialist items that change the capacity enough to need re-rating.
Site conditions worth stating in the enquiry
- Floor and ground. Trowelled concrete, rough concrete, interlock, compacted sand or a construction site. This decides tyres and whether a counterbalance or a rough-terrain truck is the right machine.
- Ramps and dock levels. A loading dock, a ramp into a basement store or a container on a trailer bed all need a truck with the gradeability to climb loaded and the mast to reach the deck.
- Aisle width and door heights. Measured, not estimated; the truck's turning radius and lowered mast height will be compared against them.
- Shift pattern. A single day shift, two shifts or continuous, which changes the fuel or battery arrangement and the operator arrangement.
- Operator. Most fleets in Egypt offer forklifts with or without an operator; whether one is included, and who is responsible for a licensed and trained driver, follows the same logic as wet versus dry rental.

Questions for the rental provider
- Rated capacity at what load centre, and the derated capacity with the attachments fitted.
- Maximum fork height, lowered mast height and free lift, and the mast type.
- Tyre type, and whether non-marking is available if the floor needs it.
- Fuel or battery arrangement: diesel consumption and who supplies it, or battery capacity, charger requirements and whether a spare battery is possible.
- Attachments included and their effect on capacity.
- Operator included or not, and the licence he holds.
- Service and breakdown response, and what the contract says about downtime — the clauses discussed in the equipment rental contract in Egypt apply to a forklift as much as to a crane.
- Term basis: whether the rate is for a day, a week or a month, and the hours it includes.
The short version
A forklift rental in Egypt is specified by five things, not one: the capacity at your real load centre and height, the mast's three dimensions against your building, tyres that suit the floor, a power source that suits the air and the electricity you have, and forks and attachments matched to the loads. Measure the heaviest load, the deepest pallet, the highest beam and the lowest door before making the call. A machine one class larger than the first guess, on the right tyres, with a sideshift, is the usual answer — and it is far cheaper than the pallet of tiles on the warehouse floor.
